Golden Moroni statues with trumpet in hand stand atop over 100 LDS temples throughout the world. The angel Moroni is believed to be the guardian of the golden plates. Generally males between the ages of 18-25 and women starting at 19 can choose to enter the mission field. They must successfully complete an interview with their respective Ward and Stake leaders to determine worthiness before embarking upon a missionary calling. Men generally serve two-year missions and women 18-month missions. Callings can be extended in the country of birth or to countries overseas. Those called to countries where English is not the dominant language are invited to attend an intense language school at the Missionary Training Center in Utah. While on their mission, men and women are partnered with a companion who they must remain with at all times.
